A high-risk pregnancy can be stressful. Know what kind of prenatal care you might need and how to cope.
Most of the time having a baby is a natural process. After a full-term pregnancy, a woman goes into labor on or near her due date and gives birth to a healthy baby. A day or two later she leaves the hospital to begin day-to-day life with her growing family. But not all pregnancies go smoothly. Some women experience what doctors refer to as a high-risk pregnancy.
A pregnancy is considered high-risk when there are potential complications that could affect the mother, the baby, or both. High-risk pregnancies require management by a specialist to help ensure the best outcome for the mother and baby.
Fibroids are muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus (womb). Another medical term for fibroids is “leiomyoma” or just “myoma”. Fibroids are almost always benign (not cancerous).
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a serious bacterial infection that can occur anywhere in the upper genital /reproductive tract (uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries).
Polycystic ovary syndrome (or PCOS) is a common hormonal condition in which women produce a surplus of androgens. This causes irregular ovulation, or even a lack of ovulation.
The ovaries are two small organs located on either side of the uterus in a woman’s body. They make hormones, including estrogen, which trigger menstruation.
Recurrent miscarriage, habitual abortion, or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is the occurrence of three or more consecutive pregnancies that end in miscarriage of the fetus before viability.
Hysterectomy is a procedure (operation) performed for removal of the uterus (womb) It is the most common surgery performed by gynaecologists.
Myomectomy, sometimes also fibroidectomy, refers to the surgical removal of uterine leiomyomas, also known as fibroids. In contrast to a hysterectomy the uterus remains preserved and the woman retains her reproductive potential.
Heavy menstrual bleeding (called menorrhagia by health care professionals) is defined as soaking a pad and/or tampon every hour or less during each menstrual cycle.
Older women have a number of gynecologic problems which generally respond well to simple therapies. Treatment is the restoration of estrogen which can be accomplished systemically or topically.
As a treatment for endometriosis, surgery can be used to alleviate pain by removing the endometriosis, dividing adhesions or removing cysts.
